Senior Accountant

Reporting to the Controller and working with other off-site personnel, the Senior Accountant will be responsible for bank and account reconciliations and analysis, general ledger maintenance, producing monthly working papers, management reports, month-end close and preparation of Annual Financial statements. This position will, working with the Controller, also be responsible for supporting the accounts payable approvals and payment processing

Key areas of responsibility

  • Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expenses entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
  • Maintains general ledger by transferring subsidiary accounts, preparing a trial balance, and reconciling entries.
  • Prepare monthly working papers and analyze transactions to determine corrective actions or adjustments.
  • Participate in development and implementation of internal control processes, accounting software upgrades, risk management assessments, system improvements, enhanced use of technology, team building and  department co-operation, cross training and integration of finance department functions
  • Ensures asset and liability accounts are reconciled on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
  • Prepare key expense account analysis.
  • Prepare monthly trend analysis and examine reasonableness of key expenses.
  • Assist with financial statements and supporting schedules for monthly reporting or as
    needed.
  • Respond to inquiries from various departments regarding monthly departmental/regional reports.
  • Record cost information for use in controlling expenditures.
  • Prepare project related budgets and subsequent forecasts for inclusion in the consolidated budget/forecast.
  • Maintain corporate records, including contracts and expenditure requests.
  • Review expenditures and account balances related to assets and expenses and
    reconcile spend reports.
  • Assist controller in preparation of financial statements for quarter and year end
  • Assist in interim and year-end audit preparations.
  • Assist controller in preparation of the monthly corporate, project and financial reports with working paper support
  • Upload payroll journal entries as well as online filing of government remittances WSIB/HST/QST
  • Reconcile fuel inventory, bank and other accounts
  • Maintain corporate records including reports, spreadsheets and corporate accounts payable files
  • Follow health and safety responsibilities, under all applicable government legislations and Ring of Fire Metals policies and procedures
  • Special projects and other duties as required

Required knowledge, competencies and expertise

  • Undergraduate degree in Commerce or Business Administration, with a major in Accounting
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA) is an asset
  • 2-3 years of progressive Accounting/Finance experience
  • Experience with multi-company reporting and consolidation an asset
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, as well as ability to work independently and take initiative
